Recognizing Common Words
Beginner
​Write out common words like big, red, jump, and help your child recognize these words.
Tip: Write the words in fun ways such as in the sand, snow, or dirt or with fun coloured pens and markers.

Intermediate
​Encourage your child to spot common words when out and about.
Tip: Try finding words on benches, buses, buildings, and fences.
​
Experienced
​Read to your child and have them point out common words in a story.
Tip: Add new words as your child is ready.

Why is this important?

Remembering common sight words helps children recognize them quickly, and when children do not need to sound words out, it improves their reading fluency.
