Enhancing Math and Social Skills with a Fun-Filled Treasure Hunt
June 14, 2024
The TOYBOX team organized a treasure hunt for the children of Oak Street Nursery School.
Setting up at Cordova Park, members of the team guided children in small groups to the
treasure using “left,” “right,” and the cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West. The
children followed with excitement, counting their steps out loud!
The large trees surrounding the park and lining the streets provided lovely shaded areas from the late spring sun. As the families trickled in, parents, guardians, and school staff stretched out on the grass or gathered around the park benches to enjoy the beautiful weather. The little ones played on the playground and eagerly joined the TOYBOX team members to search for treasure.
Activities like treasure hunts with four directions and counting steps practice fundamental math skills and help children make meaningful connections with their environment. When done in groups, these games can also encourage social skills and teamwork. Additionally, these activities highlight staying active and having fun while learning and applying new skills.
At the end of the treasure hunt, the children got to pick their favourite animal sticker!
TOYBOX members also gave them a packet of other similar activities that use compasses to try with their families. The afternoon closed with a performance from a local circus entertainer, whose show enchanted the children. Children’s smiles shined even brighter in the beautiful sunlight!
