Paper Travels
Moving Around the Map!

Beginner

Point out geographical landmarks on a map (lakes, mountains, railways, roads, oceans).

Tip: Talk about how you would travel across these geographical features (a boat to cross the ocean, a plane to fly over mountains, a car to travel on roads).

Intermediate

Select an origin and a destination on a map. Talk about which means of transport you would need to reach your destination.

Tip: Pick destinations that are both close and far away from the origin.

Experienced

List as many means of transport as possible. Plan pretend trips that would require different means of transport.

Tip: Think of bicycles, horses, helicopters, hot air balloons, and kayaks.

Why is this important?

Map reading helps children develop spatial awareness and expand vocabulary.
